Getting caught up

It turns out that I'm not very good at updating blogs, as was pointed out to me by Melanie and Corey Elias. We will again start out this year with intentions to keep you updated as much as possible, but I thank you again for your patience.

As the year begins we have a number of new initiatives which are rather exciting. Feel free to talk to your teachers or to email me if you would like more details.

First, tutoring services are still available, both for students who are ahead and those who are behind. Contact your child’s teacher for more info.

Second, after looking at the curriculum, the requirements of Bishop Kelley and what the best programs in the country are doing, we switched to Everyday math for the 3rd – 6th grade. K – 2 will follow next year. The great thing about this program is that it allows for acceleration so that all students will achieve algebra by the time they leave Saint Pius - something that is becoming increasingly desired at the high school level.

Third, a similar review of the English program has led us to leave Shirley and move to a Houghton - Mifflin program. This allows us to have vertical alignment with the middle school as well as allowing more application of the areas taught. It's also easier to help your student with if they have questions. The new program is more writing intensive and focuses on the application of necessary skills.

Fourth, we did have a couple of staff changes. Ms. Iten moved to library, Ms. Oberste was hired for 5th grade, Mrs. Roberson moved back to middle school and Mrs. McCoy took the thrid grade position place.

Finally, we’ve managed to secure a grant that is going to allow us to hire a full time counselor at Saint Pius. We’re finishing up the details now, but expect a full announcement later this week.

That covers it for now. Have a great first full week.
